Layoffs. That word can send shivers down anyone's spine. It's a reality of the corporate world, but that doesn't make it any less difficult when it happens, especially at a company like Southwest Airlines, where so many people deeply identify with the brand and culture. ๐ My heart goes out to everyone affected by the recent news.
Having spent a good chunk of my career in HR, including some time at Southwest (many years ago!), I've unfortunately been on both sides of the layoff conversation. It's never easy. That's why I decided to create a video addressing this tough topic head-on. I wanted to offer some practical advice, helpful resources, and maybe even a little bit of comfort during this challenging time.
In this video, I cover a range of topics, including:
The emotional impact:ย ย Getting laid off is a loss, and it's okay to acknowledge the feelings that come with it. ๐
Immediate steps:ย ย We talk about unemployment benefits ๐ฐ, COBRA options ๐ฉบ, and getting your retirement finances in order (401k & stock options).
Career management:ย ย I share tips on updating your LinkedIn profile, leveraging your network ๐ผ, and handling the layoff question in future interviews.
References & severance:ย ย We discuss the reality of employment references and break down the key things to consider when reviewing a severance agreement. ๐
I know this isn't a fun topic, but it's an important one. My goal is to provide you with the information and tools you need to navigate this transition as smoothly as possible. Remember, you're not alone. ๐ช
